Then onto the Mile for a poke around before conquering Arthur's seat! It was much higher than I anticipated, (but still not that bad) and really. Couldn't have had a better day for it, not many Scottish days would ever be this clear and warm. Still blowing a gale at the top though!
I know Bacchus is on everything in Europe, but its a bit of fun every time!
Thought we'd try a short cut on the way down.... Didn't quite work out and ended up the long and interesting way round, but all in good fun! (Other than the mild safety aspect)
Anyway as we were on our way down (left the peak maybe 5-10mins before), we could smell smoke and looked to see smoke coming from what looked like the top of the hill. And it was! Turns out there was a fire there (rumour says some kid lit it, but with the conditions up there it could've just been a cigarette butt flicked over the edge). No dramas, but it burned for a while (how do you get up there to put it out?). Pretty funny stuff after all the fire warnings and what is only moderate heat for what I'm used to. Such a long winter though followed by extreme heat has left the UK with lots of good dry fuel ground cover!
Anyway, kept bloody walking until we got home (at least another good 45mins from the seat) to quickly get ready and turn around into town again.
This time we went and met Felice's (and now mine) friend Cali again at a lovely bar/restaurant called Monteiths that we had walked past earlier that day. Cali is from Dublin but has been living in Edinburgh for about 10 years or more. We started off with just a cocktail or two then decided to eat there. And what a good decision!!! It turned out to be one of the meals of the trip. We all had 3 courses each, and that nice thing when you automatically all choose different dishes but also like the look of each others. So we digged in and were totally stoked, everyone was thrilled with their dishes, but we also tried each others and loved them too. And the drinks were also lovely! Yumm
Whitebait and tartar!
Mine! Scallops, fried cauliflower and cauliflower purée. Umm. Perfecto!! Massive and perfectly cooked scallops, def the best I've had.
Confit Salmon
Pigeon and beet root or rhubarb purée?!
Mine! Rolled rabbit in pancetta i think and spring veggies :)
Pork belly and cheeks
Side dishes... Duck fat chips, creamed spinach, cabbage and bacon, fennel
Pannacotta, wasn't my sorta thing actually, so didn't finish. But still hold that the place rocks!
Finished up here with a wander of the streets looking for an 'appropriate' venue for another drink or two. Didn't really find anything suitable, but found a cosy booth in some alternative club and had an absolute giggle there. It's not the venue that matters (although a good dance would've been much welcome) but the company :)
