Day 19: Castles in the trees

Off on a regional train to the north of Zealand (the island of Denmark that I'm on). First stop Hillerød for a visit to Fredericksborg Slot - another old castle but this time much more lavish with huge beautiful halls and stunning gardens that look like they've just jumped out of Wonderland (the queen of hearts' garden). This one is actually the official gallery of the monarchy, a national collection. It was pretty cool, apart from again a few too many paintings of royals and their gardeners, hairdressers etc..

Loved this guy on top. A chain attaching genitals to his triton. Maybe of a Danish rock god of old?

This one is clearly arranged in centuries so you know at least what era you're in. And this includes the modern day. Infact the galleries here from the 20th century (one of royals and one just a modern gallery), is one of the best I've seen. Really strange to have some confronting modern portraits in the same place as lots of old kings and queens, but it made for a nice finish to my visit.

Look an Aussie! This is huge and its the first thing you see in the modern section. Pretty amazing for her really! There's hardly any other paintings of other current royals. She's a bit special it seems...

This is classic... A remake of the old French Revolution painting (small to the right). When looking up close its actually really smartly done - each character is posed exactly as someone in the old art but with a modern twist. Just not all that sightly......

Made of rolled up toilet paper or something....

And then I got to go and play in the trees like a kid for while before exploring the gardens. Lovely!!

The train I took after this was not the most direct that I needed, but decided to take it anyway. Scenic long way round is usually a good option....?
Turns out I was bang on. What an aiming train journey! Most of the journey was through beautiful forest and quaint towns, and then we reached the sea! Forest and see. Yay I was tickled pink. Even if the detour did mean less time at the next stop.... The famous Louisiana museum of modern art.

Haven't quite figured out this camera on train yet...

Everything about this place was cool. I started with Lunch, yet another example of scarily good museum food, and this was situated right on the coast near beautiful lawns for people to relax on all day between visits. Strange, but this extremely popular museum is right in the middle of some small town, over half an hour from Copenhagen (ages away as far as locals are concerned). Now I get it though, means the atmosphere is all there.

Just a small portion of the gardens:

About as good as a premade open chicken sandwich can get... There was even enough condiment to deal with giant chicken breast, which was, for the most part, tender and juicy :)

The exhibitions here were really really cool. Sooooo refreshing after all the ancient stuff too. I arrived on the last day of one exhibition by Tara Donavan. And unfortunately I only photographed one of hers before finding out photos weren't allowed. But this was something else. Whole massive walls with art piece made purely of stacked drinking straws (I can here some of you rolling your eyes already), but even if the art wasn't to your liking, at least the engineering feats would be!! Like perfect square metre cube of sewing needles and one of toothpicks. With nothing supporting it, just gravity., so millions and millions of needles just poised. Amazing.

And this is the one I sneaked a shot of. Massive sculpture made of rolls of film tape..... Woah!

This was a little room you went in a closed the door and were completely surrounded by lights, in every single direction. Was amazing, could've stayed in there for ages!! (But people were waiting to enter).

And I also chanced on a big Yoko Ono exhibition here too. That was awesome, lots of interactive stuff untrue Yoko style.

After getting back to Copenhagen I was hoping that luck would present me with somewhere on the way back to my house, on the river with a cosy place to eat and read my book (current book: Orange is th new black, given to me by Felice (her work published it). True story of a well to do white, blonde American female in prison. Really interesting from her point of view.). And luck came my way that day! More than I could've imagined!! (Cos there is seriously no other places to eat on this whole strip of river, so thought my chances were slim). But lo and behold, there is a barge/pontoon floating right there with tables and cushions! And 2 restaurants across the road to choose from, where they come onto the barge to give you your food. Awesome. And it wasn't even busy.

Went somehow for another burger. Mexican style. Dunno why a burger, seemed temping to lay back and eat chips.... Didn't quite think through though how easy the burger would be to eat from a cushion though!... And the first non sharp knife in DK! But so nice to sit back like I wanted to a few hours.
