Jeanne sent me off well prepared for the next journey with plenty of fruit and a full stomach from breakfast. I was headed for Freiburg where is was meeting a German friend of mine, Michy. We met up and went straight for lunch....
A very regional meal - homemade German pasta, those yummy Pfifferlingen mushrooms again in a sauce over a pork schnitzel. Big but actually delicious (unlike the schnitzel I had a few days ago and deliberately omitted from the blog)...
Freiburg is a gorgeous old university town, very close to France. After lunch we found a big hill with a lookout, so took the 37 degree heat head on and got to the top (of the hill and lookout tower).
There was also a gorgeous restaurant at the top! (Cable car access for those less able). Cool drink yes please.
From here we cruised on to Breisach, a town 20 mins away where some family friends of Michy's lived that we were to stay with. The land all around here is lovely, lots of vineyards and cornfields. And this town is only a km or two from the border. I was very happy to find the house and the family super normal and pleasant! (The AirBnB thing is great, and everyone is lovely, but doing their own thing, you don't chat much, so nice to have a house I feel I can share without feeling like a strange person renting a room.) It felt a bit like Christmas to me actually, (it because of pure excitement) but the humid hot days, followed by a day of cooling rain and just chilling in a family home - like the last week in December!
We got home in time for a BBQ consisting of local sausages, pork steaks and turkey fillets. Very well cooked on the barbie I must say. Accompanying salads and all that. Just like Christmas see!
In the house were the parents Michael and Sonja, their son (who was out basically the whole time I was there), and their granddaughter Annabelle, who is 4. She was only there for the weekend, but it made our stay much more fun and she is definitely going to be good at languages when she starts school.... Taught her a heap of English words and her pronunciation was instantly perfect!
Funny, at the start she was confused about me not speaking German. She said to Michy - "she can't speak German but she seems smart??" She was confused that the only other people who she has met who can't speak - mentally disabled people and the likes!

annabelle you are very perceptive.
