Day 42: Montserrat madness

Today I went off to the Montserrat mountains on a climbing adventure! My arranged guide, Sergi, had injured his hand, so I was sent the replacement dude (name slipped my mind just temporarily....!) who picked me up in a van and off we headed to this awesome place, about 90mins from the city.

Montserrat is famous for the monastery it hosts - after winding up the long drive into the hills you arrive at this glorious residence!

From there we hiked, with all the climbing gear and ropes, uphill for about an hour or so! Hard but fun slog to the base of the cliff we were to climb... Many chances to look back down on the monetary and valley below.

And then the climbing began!

After a few short warm up climbs, we started our multipitch route for the day. We climbed four pitches up, totally 110m, up practically just a vertical slab which is made up of a conglomerate of river stones?!!

Here's me hanging out at an anchor after the 3rd pitch. About 80m up!

And then the top - with gorgeous views all around. It was fun being here with all our gear hauled up with us. Ten we got to take our pick to which side of the tower we would rappel down!

And on the hike back down we looked over to see the wall we had just climbed. See the little white spot half way up the tower in the middle? That's the tshirt of some guy doing the same thing that we just did!

Home that night meet my new flatmate Blake! An awesome dude from New York (an actor) who was hanging out in Barcelona for a few days after working at a summer camp in Italy for a few months. We got along really well, and decided to grace the streets together that night to partake in the Gracia festival!

This is an annual, weeklong festival, held in the Gracia district of Barcelona. For the duration of the festival, most of the streets in this district compete by way of decorating their street! Mostly advanced paper mâché themed wonderlands that thrill you to bits when you find them!

Here's the first one we stumbled across. Such an amazing surprise this whole festival was!!

And a few more...

The Jurassic park street!
