So the trip for 2014 begins. The blog will continue, but (as noted by the keenest of you) much larger intervals between updates.
This trip began on July 11th after the most hectic of weeks and days in the lead up, featuring a classic Julie tantrum. For those of you who know my tantrums - melting pot of waaaayyyyy to much to do in no time, and for those of you who think I am happy all the time; think again!
But alas, the departure time grew near, so tears aside and workload out on hold, it was time to board the plane! And let the relaxation begin!....
First stop - Mana Island in Fiji
Met the hostel staff at the airport (too friendly for their own good), and after some brekky and a brief nap in the resort office, it was time to get on the bus on the way to the ferry. The ferry over from Nadi to Mana took about 50 minutes. Just cruising past islands and serene pacific waters.
After a ukulele serenade welcome in the shallows and a bite to eat at the hostel, it was time for some solo time. As predicted, I lasted a maximum of 20 mins in the presence of the fellow backpackers (think much younger, much drunker), at the exact point where the conversation was revolving around how many times some one passed out at news years - I quietly slipped for a peace stroll on the beach. Which turned into a circumnavigation attempt. Which turned into a successful circumnavigation, despite incoming tides, rocky outcrops and rock faces with waves smashing at the base, wearing only thongs and a whole lotta burning sun. But determination to stick to the outermost land did the job!
The film castaway was made on an adjacent island. On an abandoned beach I found what I believe to be a 'Wilson' replica...
Then back to the base, a little worse for wear, but pleased with myself after the 3.5hour trek. (Island was much bigger than expected, when casually strolled out earlier that day). (Sunscreen would have helped).
The next few days included diving in the near by reefs with baby reef sharks, playing cards with other backpackers (found some that I could enjoy the company of), learning the 'Bula dance' from the locals, playing volleyball with local kids, strolling through the village, playing guitar/jamming with the locals on the beach, crowding around the small TV for breakfast, watching the soccer World Cup final (we had an Argentinian in our midst) and of course, a massage.
All meals were included with my accomodation package, so spend quite a bit of time sitting here. Every evening there was a performance in the dining hall. Followed by beer....
